Fashion in film has inspired me yet again: this time the period costume design from Midnight in Paris had me dreaming. I have wanted to see this film simply because it is directed by Woody Allen who never fails to entertain and offer cinematic insight into relationships. I had no idea I’d also be treated to a gorgeous array of gowns from the Roaring 20s (my favourite era!) plus portrayals of every noted artist and literary figure from the era. Think Ernest Hemingway, Picasso, Gertrude Stein (played by Kathy Baker), Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Salvador Dali, and Cole Porter.

  1. I was on the fence about seeing this movie, but I am a sucker for period pieces with fantastic costumes. Looks like this is now on my to rent list!

  2. I still haven’t seen the movie, but I’m loving the costumes as well! I should watch it asap! Especially since someone has told me that Woody Allen has always a continuity person whose only purpose is being careful about costumes on set. How awesome is that?? It would make my life a lot easier haha!

  3. I haven’t seen this film but it looks great, will definitely have to check it out.

  4. I wonder who did the costume design for the film! I love it.

    • Sonia Grande was the costume designer. In part of the story, the 20s flapper look was contrasted with the Belle Epoque fashions (1890s). We see the difference in the lack of corsets and the freedom from over-emphasis on female body parts like breasts and bum. It’s a reminder of they way Coco Chanel freed women by changing the structure of their clothes.

  5. I saw it and really enjoyed it, but obviously fell madly in love with everything Marion Cotillard – hope I spelt it right – wore, especially the golden number which here appears in the second picture. It’s quite a lovely movie, and even my man who is no Woody Allen fan enjoyed the atmosphere, the unique story and the acting… the main actor, I can’t remember his name, it’s siesta time where I am and my brain is struggling after a heavy dinner, anyway, he was great, very, VERY good.

    • Marion Cotillard was the most magical part of the film. She is so emininently watchable and dreamy – too good for him! Ha ha but he was cute when his eyes got wide in reaction to his experiences.

  6. I think it is my favorite Woody Allen film.

I saw your post go by on Edith Head, my all time favorite costume designer. Love her.

  7. I LOVED this movie so much! I’m also very interested in the era of the 20′s, especially in the society and how it influenced fashion, so I LOVED everything about this movie. I also love Marion Cotillard, so that was a bonus :) .

  8. Oh my gosh I have not seen this film yet, but based on these stills I think I need to! I’m in love with those dresses! I want to wear every single one of them right this minute! I love how glamourous and effortless they are. Absolutely stunning!

  9. I know this will be a strange question considering the beauty of the actresses costumes,
But can you tell me the brand of Owen Wilson’s pants? I know crazy, but my husband kept asking. If you know could you please email me?
