I spent a whirlwind day in New York yesterday visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a special talk by Aimee Mullins in conjunction with the Alexander McQueen retrospective on exhibit there until August 7. Aimee is the former NCAA track athlete who became known for her carbon fibre sprinting “legs” which were modeled on a cheetah’s hind quarters. She went on to model for McQueen in 1999, walking in a pair of hand-carved wooden prosthetic legs designed by McQueen and which many believed were boots.
My favourite insight of the talk was Aimee’s description of McQueen’s view on physical scars: “He saw them as a sign of survival and transcendence” rather than a reminder of something traumatic. The links today are mostly to do with self-love and a DIY jacket that blew my mind thrown in…because it’s one craft project even I can do, and the results are amazing.

You’re so welcome. I love what you said in your post about self-love.
I’m jealous that you got to hear Aimee talk in person!
It was a great experience seeing Aimee speak and then going straight to the McQueen exhibit after!
I read your post on Aimee before, sounds like a really interesting talk. Thanks for including my post in round Up!
I’m so excited about the way that jacket turned out! And like I said I think I can actually handle that DIY project.
Thank you for the link to the jacket DIY! And it would have been wonderful to hear Aimee speak. I recently watched her Ted Talk and was very moved by it.
Didn’t she do an amazing job with the jacket? I hope mine will be near as good. Yep, seeing Aimee speak was moving. She has an amazing aura about her.
That corset is beyond amazing.
Kinda creepy, but that’s McQueen. He finds beauty in the macabre.
