Quotations inspire me and help me feel good about the world. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll notice I post them daily and they usually get an enthusiastic response. The power of words to motivate and captivate is embodied beautifully and succinctly in a timeless quotation. Here are 10 fashionable designer quotations, starting with my favourite of all-time.
1. “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.” -Coco Chanel
2. “The most important relationship in your life is the relationship you have with yourself. Because no matter what happens, you will always be with yourself.” -Diane Von Furstenberg
3. “We’ve come a long way. Power dressing now is designed to let the woman inside us come through.” -Donna Karan
4. “It is not possible for a man to be elegant without a touch of femininity.” -Vivienne Westwood
5. “Fashion is born by small facts, trends, or even politics, never by trying to make little pleats and furbelows, by trinkets, by clothes easy to copy, or by the shortening or lengthening of a skirt.” -Elsa Schiaparelli
6. “Fashion fades; style is eternal.” -Yves St. Laurent
7. “I’ve always believed one woman’s success can only help another woman’s success.” -Gloria Vanderbilt
8. “Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves, and of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d just walk around naked all the time.” -Betsey Johnson

10. “A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes.” -Vera Wang

A bit obvious but definitely Coco Chanel ‘Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening’
I love quote too, I definitely feel inspired by them
Yes, that’s a great one, too. Kind of reminds me of the YSL quote. Susie Bubble has that Chanel quote as her tag line.
Love this post! I’m a quote nerd, so this was right up my alley!
I like that description: I’m a quote nerd, too. They lift me up and make me feel good.
can’t remember it exactly but Valentino said something like what a woman wants to wear most is the embrace of the man she’s in love with
That’s so beautiful and romantic…just like a Valentino dress!
That’s so sweet…and I can relate.
I love this post! So many great quotes, but I think the Vera Wang one is my favourite!

Inspirational ebay finds. Handpicked by fashion insiders living and working in London, UK.
Thank you, I’m in love with quotes as well. I also have an ebay store. I’m going to give yours a browse. Sounds like a nice concept.
Not from a designer, but I love the facetiousness of this quote from Oscar Wilde: Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.
I love that one, too; I have quoted it many times even though I think it is anti-fashion? He’s brilliant
My fave is number 6!
#6 is one of the classics and it’s featured in the trailer for his movie which I’m dying to see. Except it reads “Fashion fades; love is eternal” (a little twist)
A wonderful post! DVF always has such a strong, yet feminine, viewpoints, as to remind us that being a woman is not a consolation prize. And Betsey Johnson makes a very good point – something to keep in mind. Lovely job Laura and congratulations on being included in Links a la Mode – I always appreciate your willingness to speak confidently about a topic and take a side. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much for your support. I appreciate your kind words and glad you signed up for the newsletter! I also love strong yet feminine women (it’s not an oxymoron!)
Love it! The post brought a smile to my face. I love Betsy Johnson’s in particular. Fashionable women sure are smart thinking ones and it was nice to read your selection

I’m glad you liked it, Milly. I love quotations, and it’s amazing how thought-provoking quotes about fashion can be.
Loved this post… my fave quote here has to be the first one, by Coco Chanel… too many of us torture ourselves with uncomfortable attires in the name of style
Chanel was a revolutionary when it came to providing women with clothes they could actually move in and making them feminine and fashionable at the same time.
